A Thumbnail History of MAPMG

The HMO Act passed in 1973 provided a Federal program to develop alternatives to the traditional forms of health care delivery by assisting and encouraging the establishment and expansion of HMOs. In this environment, Georgetown University created an HMO staff model called Georgetown Community Health Plan (GTCHP) in 1973. The physicians were employed by the Health Plan.

In 1980, Georgetown Community Health Plan was acquired by Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States (KPMAS).  The original medical group  contracted exclusively to serve its members was The Capitol Area Permanente Medical Group (CAPMG). The CAPMG continued to expand over the next few years and changed its name to Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) in 1984.

In 2009, MAPMG affiliated with The Permanente Medical Group, TPMG. MAPMG is led by the MAPMG Executive Medical Director, who reports directly to  the CEO and Executive Director of TPMG.

MAPMG is now a team of over 1,600 world class physicians of more than 50 medical and surgical specialties serving KPMAS members across Maryland, D.C. and Virginia. Over the past four decades, MAPMG has transformed the care of almost 800,000 members and has become the one of the premier medical groups in the country!
